Further alerts if they don't ask

After 1NT-2D; 2H (for example), I follow this approach:

  1. If they asked what the alerted 2D bid meant ("transfer"), then I don't alert 2H (since it's self-evident)
  2. But if they didn't ask what the alerted 2D bid meant, then I do alert 2H.

Is this a reasonable (legal?) approach?

    Hi Dale

I always alert both bids. 2H can convey more than just completing the transfer, would you always alert 3H?

Also, after the 2D bid only LHO can ask for an explanation, it is not legal 'to ask for partner' etc. So, you cannot assume the 4th person at the table knows 2H is not natural.

The Manual says the enforced 3C response to Lebensohl is alertable

So I see an exact parallel with the enforced 2H response to 2D transfer which isn't explicitly mentioned in the Manual

The sequence 1NT - 2D (alert) - 2H (no alert) might be a Stayman variation (2H is not alertable as it is a natural bid)

Interesting. I'd have thought both should be alerted, whether or not the 2D has already been explained. Neither is natural and neither is in such common use that they are deemed to be self-alerting (reg 30.2.4).

To further on that subject:  most of the room play a straight Acol system where 1NT opening shows 12-14 ( or 11-14 depending) and a rebid from opener of 1NT therefore shows 15-16 HCP and Bal.  A situation arose where my opponents opened 1D her partner said 1H and the opener rebid 1NT...all assumes it means 15-16.  So no competition on our part.. upon discussion at the end...I find out they are playing a simili Standard American bidding style, where the rebid of INT is just a 12-14 opening  ....and their 1NT opening is actually 15-17HCP !

No alerts, no system card on the table and no pre-alert!...I do get annoyed when NZB still does not make having a system card in full view of the opps at all plays mandatory !  How are we to know when this occurs?  I explained that to them...and the reply was " well ...."so and so" (not naming the person here) said it was ok!..

I believe it is not ok! specially when there are so many juniors and Intermediates who haven't a clue at what the opponents are doing!

I asked them to a) bring a system card from now on or b) have a  "pre-alert" in full view next time...to which they said "ok".

Would love your opinions on this please...as a director, if a pair was damaged because of this, I would redress the score.

    Hi Helene

Standard American and the 1NT rebid.  Ideally this would be forewarned before play, as all pairs should briefly describe their system.   It still requires the opp. to appreciate that the 1NT rebid, unalerted, might not be what they expect.

This is simlar to a 1D opening that could be on a 3-card suit, better minor.   No alert needed, just bridge ?   Hmm.
