New Zealand Youth on Real Bridge

NZ in Under 26 RealBridge International Competition

Last Sunday night, 4 young gentlemen; Thomas Freeman-Greene, Hamish Jelleyman, Galen McGinlay (our South Island rep.) and Alex Shan embarked on their first international assignment in a fun event organised by the people at RealBridge. They can all hold their heads high after a gruelling 30 boards that kept them up to almost midnight, particularly tough with some on the team still at Intermediate.

After a promising mid-table showing in the opening rounds, the more wide-awake opposition from Thailand and Europe got the better of our lads. One of the bright spots in R1 versus Norway was Hamish's forcing bid of 3Club-small on this hand helping Alex find game while the opponents stopped in 3Heart-small at the other table.

They are looking forward to the next chance to redeem themselves in hopefully a more friendly time of day.

Rather strangely, perhaps because of Alex’ first bid, South led the Diamond-small9. North won and switched to a club. Alex did not find the Heart-smallQ but had a comfortable 9 tricks anyway. (6 hearts, 2 clubs and Diamond-smallA). Meanwhile, at the other table, West made lots of overtricks in hearts but the contract was only 3Heart-small, 5 useful imps to the Kiwis.

Thanks to Paul Coleman for the above report.
