National Rubber Bridge Finals update

Canterbury v Waikato Bays in National Rubber Bridge Final

Tony Quinlivan and Stuart Grant of Christchurch will take on Cambridge’s Clare Coles and Kevin Whyte in the final of the National Rubber Bridge competition. Tony and Stuart won their semi-final earlier this week against Wellington’s Brian Cleaver and David May, played like most of the finals’ matches this year on BBO.

Brian and David were out of the blocks very quickly and up 1400 after 7 boards, but Tony and Stuart had great cards through the middle stages and hung on to win by 1440.

If you ever thought that the National Rubber Bridge finals were the province of Open players, then Tony and Stuart have proven this not to be the case. They are representing their Region in the Intermediate division of this year’s Inter-Provincial Championships and to quote Tony “If a couple of lowly rated club players can make it thru to the final with a bit of luck and a good understanding of rubber tactics, beating grandmasters etc on the way then that should be an incentive for pairs all over the country to enter in 2021.”

Tony and Stuart are both Local Masters while Clare and Kevin, both Open players, are National Master and Master respectively.

The final will also be played on BBO, on Thursday November 26th. As with other BBO Rubber matches, no kibbitzing will be allowed.
