Club Happenings Around the Country

New Plymouth.

We have asked our bridge clubs what they are doing to help their members during this very difficult time, both from the point of view of actual help as many members are in the dangerous 70+ on their own category but also to be able to keep our players playing bridge, which means playing on-line.

Hopefully, we will hear from our clubs and can then relay the news to you on-line.

We start today in New Plymouth:

"An email campaign encouraging members from New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera clubs has resulted in over 60 players registering with BBO to play in the thrice weekly tournaments.  Pam Livingston has put her hand up to direct and has been approved by BBO to do so.  Russell Wilson is able to support her as he is also an accredited BBO director.

Many of our members are unfamiliar with BBO. Club members with some experience of BBO have provided telephone support to those who needed it.  One week ago, Pam directed 9 tables for “Pairs Taranaki” and last Sunday the participating players had grown to 13 tables.

We currently run 3 tournaments a week.

Tuesdays 1pm

Thursdays 8pm

Sundays 8pm

The focus at this stage is less on the competition than on the camaraderie and social connections. Our tournaments are not regulated by grade and it has been pleasing to see mixed grades partnering each other.

Another initiative, not part of the tournament list, is a telephone tree that our Club Secretary and a Committee member are setting up as a way of ensuring the over 70s are contacted regularly."

So, both the bridge and caring sides of the current situation are being well catered for down in New Plymouth. Thanks for the update.
