A TOUGH DAY FOR WARE

The part Kiwi, part Australian with a touch of Irish, team Ware were well beaten in the final of the Gold Coast Teams by Coutts (James Coutts, Shane Harrison, Nabil Edgtton, Ellena Moskovsky, Liam Milne, Andy Hung) 47-130, losing each of the four 14 boards sets.

This board from the first stanza set the tone:

 

Neither North-South pair really got this board quite right but for Ware, Matthew Thomson- Hugh McGann set themselves an almost impossible task of having to make 5 from the East seat, presumably after the opposition  had competed to 5. Hindsight shows that 5 can be doubled and beaten by 2 tricks after the 2 lead or by 1 trick after a heart lead. However, even a friendly A lead would not have allowed 5 to make (as long as a second spade followed!). James Coutts, South, led a more normal 9 and Thomson ended up 2 down.

The key, though, was whether Ware-Tislevoll could beat 4 in the other room. To beat this contract, South must lead a club to the ace, followed by the spade switch. South will take two spade tricks and lead a third round of spades. What can East do? Ruff high means losing a trick to South’s Q while ruffing low will see North’s 7 score the defence’s 4^th trick.

Alas, Michael Ware led the same 9 allowing trumps to be drawn before East tackled the spade suit. Hence 12 imps to Coutts.

Nevertheless, despite disappointment in the final, a good tournament for Michael Ware- GeO Tislevoll, Matthew Thomson – Hugh McGann and Tony Nunn – Justin Mill.

IVY DAHLER BUTLER SWISS PAIRS

There were some great Kiwi results in this final event of the week. Invercargill’s Anne Somerville and Geoff Eyles won the East-West field in the Open field, by the tiniest of margins, 0.06 vp. They were pipped for the Ivy Dahler Trophy by the North-South winners who scored 147.88 vp but nevertheless a superb performance.

However, we can claim the winners of the Restricted field, being Annette Hagan and Janice Willoughby who snuck in by just under one vp with three of the top placings going to pairs from this side of the Tasman. The winners are members of the Napier and Taradale clubs.

Hopefully, all those who crossed the Tasman enjoyed their week of bridge whether or not they featured in our daily reviews.
