71.30% is a mighty good score in a tournament. It came in a Junior tournament last month. Here are recent tournament winners in our region including the Juniors who excelled:

It was Peter Hubscher and Carol Murphy who excelled after lunch at Taradale with 71.30% to overtake Alison Ritchie and Marie Bymolt who had started so well with 66.44%.

In the Levin Intermediate Pairs, Gerald and Dayle Harpur scored an excellent second round 65% to tie for first place after the two sessions. Carol Nelson and Cheryl Jones also excelled after lunch with 64.88% to win the Havelock North Junior Pairs while a second session 65.75% saw Charles and Anthony Ker home at the Levin Open Pairs. The unlucky pair there and the previous week at Wanganui were Pat and Martin Oyston who finished second both times.

There were plenty of high session scores in the Feilding Charity Pairs, led by Benjamin Gibb and Chris Smith with 66.24% and Dorothy Mackay and Sarah Green (65.14%) but it was the second session 67.22% from Cindy Lowndes and Alistair James which saw them home.

"New blood" on the Regional Committee

The new look Regional Committee has a more “Eastern” look to it with Mairi Fitzsimons taking over from Colin Carryer as Chairperson while Francey Rolls has taken over from Sandra Calvert as Secretary/Treasurer. Both Colin and Sandra have done splendidly in their roles. Colin’s enthusiasm and wisdom will not be lost as he remains on the Regional Committee whose other members are Bryan Green and Jan Nairn.

More Members and More Bridge at Wanganui

New members are the life blood of any organisation. So it is really pleasing to see 25 learners turning up for the Thursday evening lessons being run again by President Graham Wood, John Botting and a small band of helpers. Almost all have a good idea of how to handle cards and a 25-member boost to the playing ranks would be a very welcome result for the club.

A winter series of social Sunday bridge has been introduced this year and has been very well supported. The sessions have included a Howell movement, rubber bridge, Swiss pairs, Goulash and Speedball (5 minutes to bid and play each hand).

 Calling new Directors

Great news for budding Directors .. or for those who would like to brush up on the laws.  The Wanganui Club will be the centre for a regional tutorial convened by Mairi Fitzsimons and Allan Joseph while Caroline Wiggins will handle the eastern part of the region. Details will be forwarded to all clubs once the dates are finalised. The next Director examinations are scheduled for October. These will be very timely and important sessions for those interested in qualifying.

Rubber Bridge

The Regional Rubber Bridge qualifying event is down to two pairs with Robyn and Don Nightingale to take on Kay Townsley and Ray Kemp for the right to represent the region at Hamilton next month.

Would you believe it?

Russell Wilson is one of the region’s most successful players these days. Indeed, he recently celebrated success in the South Island Pairs, held in Picton.

However, he is not known as one of this Region’s fastest players. Thus, it is indeed something newsworthy to report that Russell won recently a Speedball event held as part of the New Plymouth Club’s Sunday afternoon program. He and his partner, Lyn Muller, scored 61.35%. Only a very unkind player would scroll through the boards to see if Lyn played the majority of the hands!

Seriously, a great result in Picton, Russell.
