New Zealand at the Yeh Bros event, Day 3.

Consolation Swiss at Yeh Bros Cup

After the disappointment of just missing out the main knock-out stage, the New Zealand Open team looked to improve in the Consolation Swiss. It was not to be as after 5 of the 8 rounds, they are in 14th place in the 16 team field, a field which could grow in number as teams get knocked out of the main event.

A thin slam to bid after a 1Heart-small-2Club-small-3Club-small start with West’s shape and controls being just what his partner needed. The opposition cards lay very well for the declarer, GeO Tislevoll who made all 13 tricks. There was another club slam from this match which will feature in the next article, “Slam on 14” . The other club slam, a grand, was bid and made by Whibley- Brown in the match against PD Times. The opposition bid only to 6Club-small.

Not so hard, perhaps, with an uncontested auction but not so easy with either West starting with a Weak 2 in diamonds or South starting proceedings with a weak 2 suited bid. Try it after an opposing pre-empt:

Michael's 5NT asked his partner to pick a slam with Matt's 6Club-small giving his partner a choice. The sight of dummy confirmed to Matthew that he had chosen well!

The event continues with three more rounds on Wednesday to be followed by qualifying rounds of the Open Pairs event.
