Akaroa have just completed their biennial Beginners Classes, with 11 players receiving their graduation certificates and NZ Bridge Cheatsheet. Their first full night of bridge will be the Mid-winter Dinner on July 31st. The computer will have to go into the kitchen to find room for the extra tables !
On 11th June Diamond Harbour players came to Akaroa for the annual contest, upstairs at the Boatshed on a beautiful sunny day. We split the field into three teams, Akaroa, Diamond Harbour, and The Bays, with 6 pairs in each team. Diamond Harbour pairs came in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th and 13th to carry off the trophy.

Diamond Harbour Bridge Club is the newest affiliated club in New Zealand. That is kind of true as the club disaffiliated a few years back. Welcome back and we hope the club and its members enjoy the benefits of affiliation.
Rangiora and Crockfords played recently their annual interclub fixture. It is great to see a couple of neighbours get together for a neighbourhood event....and even nicer for Rangiora who won the event, again. Rangiora players certainly enjoyed the hospitality of Crockfords and will take great care of the trophy (again) for another 12 months.
The Christchurch Club hosted a successful fund raiser for the region's regular internationals, Jenny Wilkinson and Shirley Newton in early July. This helped with their expenses for their up-coming trip. Support from clubs both affiliated and unaffiliated was appreciated. Thank you for your support. Along with Kris Wooles, their international npc, Jenny and Shirley have recently been interviewed by Plains FM (local community radio station) about the trip and the game in general.
Here is one "carrot" which we guarantee Jenny and Shirley will not win (if they do, we will report it very quietly).
Plans are well underway for the National Swiss Pairs which the Christchurch Club is hosting in early September. Assistance will be provided to those coming from out of town to find accommodation, also with transport needs between the bridge club and motels / airport.
The tournament will feature a money back guarantee of an A point, or fraction thereof. A full refund of entry fee will be given to any pair who lose every match they play. 
We look forward to seeing many out of towners in Christchurch for this event. Mark it in your diary now.
Tournament Results
Paula Gregory and Michael Johnstone scored well in the first session of the Temuka All Grades, 66.18%. That proved just to be enough to win the two session event but by only 0.60% from John Fechney and Sue Rosevear. Another pair who did substantially better in the first than the session of an event were Michael Hume and Chris Bras who had a boomer morning in the Rangiora 8B scoring 73.20%. Matters did not quite go their way in the afternoon though they finished just over 4% ahead of Jane Morris and Sarah Garland at the end of the second session.
30 pairs competed in the recent Canterbury Swiss Pairs in Christchurch with locals Richard Lapthorne and Neil Hawkins winning all 8 matches , averaging nearly 15vp per match and finishing over 10 vps ahead of second placed Max Morrison and Jane Lennon.
Promoting our Game
Christchurch will be hosting a Lifestyle Expo in October with the Regional Committee supporting the Christchurch Bridge Club which will be show-casing our game at the event.
