Weekend at Winton

April 1^st kicked off with the Winton 5A Open Teams. This event was well supported by Otago Club players. The catering was excellent thanks to generous country hospitality. Craig Rogers directed the round robin affair with Glover  winning comfortably on the day. Local player Lindsay Glover partnered Moss Wylie with Glenn and Sam Coutts from Otago who played percentage bridge. Peter Hall teamed up with Anne-Marie Russell, Anne Somerville and Geoff Eyles . They won their last match to move up to second just at the right time.

Winton Intermediate Teams ran the following day with 10 teams. Ailsa and Snow Dempster combined well with Judith Lawton and Elaine Moir to win overall after winning their last match well. Richard Hishon and Jan White who also played the previous day in the Open, came 2^nd with Queenstown pair Annette Fea and Gillian Macleod.

Well done to the Winton Club for running two days of well organised bridge, made all the more enjoyable with their friendly hospitality.

Murihiku Weekend

Southland’s premier bridge tournament, the Murihiku Teams and Pairs were held 29/30 April. The Invercargill Licensing Trust generously sponsored this event, allowing a hearty lunch each day.

Lindsay Gunn from Dunedin directed the two day event. Saturday saw 5 rounds of Swiss in the Teams. Bruce Batchelor with Moss Wylie, Bradley Johnston and Lindsay Glover managed to scrap a win after coming unstuck in the last round against the Woodhead . Trailing by a whisker, Schwartz  comprising of Arleen Schwartz, Chris Ackerley, Peter Hall and Anne-Marie Russell finished 2^nd.

Day two saw three sessions of competitive match-point bridge.

 

Bradley Johnston (South), playing with Lindsay Glover came up with the imaginative lead of the 4 against East's 4 on the above board, to take all the match points. By Bradley's underlead of his ace to his partner’s queen, Lindsay managed to score a ruff with his 10. Unfortunately things got worse for declarer. On spotting the 10, they decided not to take the trump finesse playing instead for North to have held originally KT doubleton. Down one when when most were making an overtrick.

Bradley and Lindsay finished second after three very consistent session scores. However, after their scrumptious lunch, Chris Ackerley and Arleen Schwartz produced a match winning result of 68% in their middle session to win with style. Well done.
