This last weekend has been Inter Provincial Trials Weekend in all regions. In our two Northern regions, there were very impressive results by two Women’s pairs.

Most regions ran the trials Butler Pairs or Swiss Pairs style with combined heats for the Open, Women and Seniors’ fields and a separate field for Intermediates. Wellington were the only region to run Teams trials and then only in two of their categories.

20 pairs took part in the combined Open/Women/Senior trials in Waikato Bays with one of our current Women’s international pairs, Jenna and Christine Gibbons topping the field after the seven round event. They finished nearly 9 vps ahead of second placed Tony Hacking and Pat Rutherford.

Auckland – Northland had one field for the Women/ Senior event with the other two competitions playing their own round robin events. Susan Humphries said that she came over from Sydney to play with her international partner, Steph Jacob, “for the practice”. She made that point strongly as they entered the Open field. They got some pretty good practice as they finished top of the strong 14 pair field with just two losses in 13 matches finishing 13 vps ahead of the third pair.

Although our other Women’s international pairs of this and recent years, Jenny Wilkinson- Shirley Newton, Linda Cartner- Glenis Palmer and Andi Boughey- Carol Richardson all made the Women’s event, our current Open internationals had a lean time of it, with Michael Cornell, Michael Whibley- Matthew Brown and Martin Reid-Peter Newell all missing out.

Steph and Susan had a huge finish averaging just under 15vps per match over their last 5 x 8 board matches. Here is a good example of aggression paying off at a low level:

 

Steph’s first double gave her partner an awkward bid. Susan chose her three card minor suit. However, when Steph doubled once more, Susan was happy enough to defend. West had nowhere to go for tricks after Steph led two high clubs and switched to her trump. Five tricks were all West could accumulate with 500 coming Steph and Susan’s way on a hand where the only making game, 3NT by North was pretty unbiddable.
