Kiwis on The Coast

There’s hundreds of them invading Queensland’s Gold Coast in the name of Bridge. They should certainly have a great time at and away from the bridge table. For all us “Cinderellas” at home (it’s OK, today the sun is shining and the temperature is not an unbearable 40 degrees), here is the first report of what the “invaders” are doing, well, at the bridge table!

How many of them are there? My abacus is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but here’s a run- down of the number who played the Pairs and Swiss Pairs events over the week-end. Saturday was qualifying day in the Pairs events with the first two of the three final sessions taking place on Sunday, the third on Monday. The Swiss Pairs results are final.

Bobby Richman Championship Pairs

Open                                                              186 pairs             Kiwis participating    73

In the qualifying, Michael Whibley and his US partner, Roger Lee, came top East-West, followed by Kathy Boardman and Peter Gill, and Vicki Bouton and Stephen Williams, the first named in each pair coming from this side of the Tasman. Matt Brown and Ella Pattison were the top Kiwis North-South in 4th place. There is no carry-forward to the final in these events. In the A final after two rounds, Kathy Boardman, with Peter Gill, is the best of the Kiwis in 7th place with Michael Whibley-Roger Lee 10th and the top Kiwi pair, Barry Jones-Jenny Millington in 18th place.

Seniors                                                          48 pairs               Kiwis participating      9

The only Kiwis to break 50% in the qualifying were Lorraine Inglis and Judy Plimmer and in the finals, Section B were Ann Woodhead- Bob Lawrence.

Intermediate                                                108 pairs                Kiwis participating  21

Max Robb-Gwyneth Hopkins qualified 1st N/S with a healthy 118.10% total and are just under half-way of the 28 pairs in the A Final at the two thirds stage.

Restricted                                                    138 pairs                  Kiwis participating 44

Kinga Hajmasi-Andrew Michl qualified 2nd E/W with 117.89%. In the A Final, the Kiwi challenge is being led by Yvonne Whittle and Francey Rolls who are third on 111.51%, about 11% behind the leaders. Donna Upchurch- Nebojsa Djorovic have scored a great 128.56 in the B final but trail the leaders by nearly 5% in second place. Other Kiwis doing well in the finals are:

B Final

3rd     Turei and Christine Haronga          121.50

C Final

3rd Julia and Peter Watson                      113.54

E Final

1st Brad Tattersfield and Jan Borren       778 mps

Novice Pairs                                                   80 pairs   but no Kiwis (I could recognise!)

Weekend Matchpoint Swiss Pairs Open  158 pairs                Kiwis participating 48

This was an 8 round event. The highest placed Kiwi was Murat Genc in 12th place with 101.71 vps playing with Lisa Csima. The top all Kiwi pair were the 15th placed Brad Johnston- Moss Wylie on 98.99 vps. Top score was a massive 131.13.

Weekend Matchpoint Swiss Pairs Under 500 mps.

                                                                       88 pairs                   Kiwis participating  9

That makes a total of 1612 players participating including 204 Kiwis. I recall that is a similar number compared with a year ago. Is that why our beaches were empty over the week-end? Surely it was nothing to do with the weather!
