Writing the history of the Rangiora club for its 50th anniversary next March, the researcher came across this comment from the late Jack Green who died aged 99 years and played until his 98th, “I never buy green bananas. I might die before they ripen.”
Winter is over, or is it? And the tournament circuit is all but over with the Canterbury Men’s, Women’s and Same gender Pairs, and Canterbury Charity Pairs to be played. Ashburton and Rangiora respectively will be hosting these events.
The region’s 10A Pairs were held on 17 September at Rangiora with 32 pairs competing, if not for the top spots, then amongst their peers. The Christchurch pair of Pavla Fenwick and Mehboob Chiba 61.69% took the honours edging out John Fechney and Sue Rosevear from Ashburton. The best Intermediates were Ken Johns and Jack Lyons 53.83% in 8th and local lads too.

The Canterbury Allgrades 8B was hosted by Christchurch with 36 pairs.Honours to John Fechney and Sue Rosevear with 64.78% from Neil Hawkins and Richard Lapthorne.
Timaru held its Anniversary Pairs hosting a satisfactory 30 pairs. The silver ware was taken by Chris Ackerley and Murat Genc from Dunedin with 61.75;0.6% ahead of local hopefuls Ron Griffiths and Jim Burford.
Crockfords held the last of their three tournaments with pairs for Intermediate and Open grades. Doing Rangiora proud were Ros Crighton [Junior] and Carole Anderson with 58.34% in the Intermediate, a full 5% ahead of their rivals. Open success went to Brian Goulter and Max Robb ahead of Allan Schroeder and Lyall Smith.
