Interesting Bidding

Bridge is not all about Play and Defence. You can play a hand brilliantly and get zero match-points if the contract is wrong. You can defend like a demon but you just will not score that well if you have been out-bid. What else is there? The bidding, of course.

For several months, each Wednesday on this website has been a “Play and Defence” day. We also need to ensure we get to the correct, or best possible contract first. So, we will be starting a feature on bidding, the success or failure of which will be up to you, the readers.

The scope is very wide. It can be about your favourite system, a favourite convention, a problem hand, a recurring problem situation, simply a request of the best way to bid a hand. The feature is open to all, whether you are a new player or one who has been playing longer than me. (You have been playing a long time!) Some weeks, therefore, the article will be at a higher, some weeks a lower level. Maybe, when we get inundated with requests, we can split the feature into two, but not initially.

If you contribute and say write up about a bid or a hand, the length should be roughly between 300 and 700 words. If it is any longer, we may transfer it to another feature “Uninteresting Bidding.” Of course, you may just ask a short question…and we will provide the answer.

Hopefully, the feature will develop in a constructive and interesting way.

Send any articles, questions, stories to “Interesting Bidding” at Richard.solomon@nzbridge.co.nz

Watch out very soon for the first bidding article.

p.s. Wednesday will remain “Play and Defence Day”. We will present bidding on a different day. Watch out next Monday.

New Forum

Under "My NZB" on this website, there are some forums which you may like to contribute to or just read. For several months, there have been three:

Directing

Teaching

Master Solvers: Tricky Decisions and Opinions

A fourth one has now been set up, a Technology Forum. You cannot go far now in the world of Bridge without being involved in

some form of Technology. If this area is your forte, please take the time to contribute, share ideas, make some helpful suggestions. The success of such forums depends on you the readers.
