Central Districts' News with George MacLachlan

A tour this time through recent tournaments…starting in mid-August at Taradale where the Open Pairs was quite a low scoring affair with George Masters and Judith Johnson getting home by 0.30% from Jenny Wilson and Alan Doddridge.

George became sponsor as well as player the following week, the George Masters Motors CD Fullarton Teams taking place in Hastings. His team, which included John Pitts and Mairi and Matthew Bristow, finished in second place 5.22vps behind Wayne Burrows, Charles Ker and Sandra and Rod Dravitzki.

Meanwhile, Ken Bateman and Jan Whyte turned in two consistent mid 60’s sessions to win the Hokowhitu Daffodil Day Pairs from Anita Thirtle and her partner.

At the end of the month, there were two tournaments in a weekend at New Plymouth.  Alister Stuck and Russell Wilson had a great day in the Open Pairs winning by over 13% while Glenice Houghton and Carol Mack scored 67.12% in the second session of the Intermediate/Junior Pairs to beat Irene Taunt and Helen Kelly who had scored 70.58% in the morning session. The following day was Swiss Pairs. For the second day running, Kathrin Boardman and Pam Livingston finished in second place, this time losing out by 1.56 vps to Liz and Blair Fisher.

Into September and it was a ¾ Palmerston North victory in the Napier Open Teams: Jan Whyte- Carolyn Yeomans, Jenny Wilson and Alan Doddridge.  On the same day, Julia and Peter Watson won the Levin Multigrade Swiss Pairs by 12.7vps.

There were not too many travellers the following week to Gisborne for the Pak n Save 8B Open Pairs. Jean and Robin Bennett did not mind that as a 67.08% first session score cemented a very comfortable win for them. Across the region at Hawera, Colin Carryer and Sandra Calvert averaged 62.8% to win that club’s 5A Open.  Shirley Humphrey and Mandy Jones won Palmerston North’s Intermediate Pairs while on the week before Congress, Jenny Wilson and Alan Doddridge won Hastings’ 5A Pairs.

Looking forward, we have two big events in Central Districts. On 5th/6th November in Gisborne, the popular Zelda Morris Provincial Pairs will be taking place while two week-ends later in New Plymouth, there will be the 15A National Teams. Let’s see lots of CD representation in both events.

Finally, bridge is not all about tournaments. Not many clubs can boast of male members aged 90 or more still playing. Every week, Wanganui has two, Jack Ennis, 93, and Nick Gousgounis who recently turned 90. Keep it going, boys!
