A BIT OF COLOUR AND A QUIZ
On Sunday 14th August at the RANGIORA club, famous for its hospitality, the Rangiora Rascals v Crockfords Crocodiles played in the annual "teams of pairs" event, a 12 table competition. The Crocs, weary after travel out of town and home town advantage for the Rascals saw Rangiora get home by a comfortable margin of 647% – 455% [the sum of the percentages for each team]. A feature of the day was use of the new zig-zag option in NZ Scorer. It worked a treat and saved a lot of manual calculation. Well done Martin O! Scoring well were Gaynor Hurford and Dawn Simpson for Rangiora with 63.96%, followed by Tony Biddington and Ian Brash, also Rangiora 62.5%. Heading Crockfords were Elena and Peter Udy at 61.53%. The best club Junior was Sarah Waldron, Rangiora, on 55.68% who teamed up with her mum Heather.
CHRISTCHURCH held its winter event with fields in the Open and Intermediate. The intermediates enjoyed the barometer scoring of 9 x 5 board matches and seeing the scores, on the monitor, at the end of rounds. Winners were Michael and Mary Small (Crockfords) with 58.89% and followed by Nina Mogridge and Terri McFedries (Christchurch) with 53.61. Best Juniors were the Crockfords pairing of Margaret Fraser and Sam Gurney. In the Open with a field of 12 tables Max Robb and Gwyneth Hopkins were first scoring 61.19% followed by Neil Hawkins and Richard Lapthorne with 59.77% and Jenny Wilkinson and Tim Schumacher with 59.73%.
The following day at the Crockfords club, the region INTERCLUB event was held with Open, Intermediate and Junior teams from Timaru, Ashburton, Crockfords, Rangiora and Christchurch( two teams). Overall winners were Christchurch Red comprising Jenny Wilkinson, Shirley Newton, Daniel and David Skipper; Madge Baker, Joan Hazelhurst, Julia Thomas and Terri McFedries; Luba Roth, Rodney Allfrey, Sally Croy and Ant Lilley. Rangiora was second. Perhaps in 2017 the smaller clubs could enter composite teams. We look forward to seeing Akaroa, Waimate, Temuka and Geraldine. It’s been Olympic season so that the next Wednesday evening, RANGIORA held a gold medal dais presentation for its interclub winning Juniors, a ‘national’ anthem of Stings’s ‘Fields of Gold’ and raising of the flag, all to the delight of those present.

RANGIORA’S Spring tournament was held on 6 September with 25 tables and coincided with the club rooms’ 5th year of operation. Spring cometh!
Success at the ASHBURTON Junior and Intermediate event on 27 August was had by Rex Green and Deborah Matthews (Christchurch) on 65%, Pauline and Paul Fergus ( Ashburton 61%,) and Joanne Paterson and Alison Price (Oamaru) 60%. Best Junior pair and forth were Sally Croy and Ant Lilley (Christchurch) on 55%.
Cantabrians Jenny Wilkinson and Shirley Newton are currently representing New Zealand in the Women's World Bridge Championships in Poland. Kris Wooles is their npc. Good luck to them and to all Cantabrians off to the National Bridge Congress at the end of this month.
