South Island Pairs winners from Dunedin

Congratulations to Ellena Moskovsky and James Coutts on winning the South Island Pairs, storming home with a 67% session in the second round of the final. They are part of the New Zealand team which will very soon be taking part in the World Mixed Team Championships in Poland. We wish the team well. Glenn Coutts, partnered by Michael Ware, finished second in this event.

Other Tournament Results.

In other tournament news, Lorraine Peacock and Margaret Perley would have been very pleased with their efforts at the Oamaru All Grades. They won by over 15% with session scores of 68 and 66.38%. Nice.

Trish Morris and Robyn Hellier combined well to win the Gore Pairs while Sam and Glenn Coutts won Winton’s Open Pairs. Adrien Drever and Judy Robertson averaged 63% to win Taieri’s 8B Open Pairs. This pair was in fine form as the following week, they were undefeated in winning the Otago Club’s Swiss Pairs. Finally, back to Oamaru, where Ann Paterson and Barbara Hutton won the Junior Pairs while that brother-sister combination of Genevieve and Tim Webb won the Intermediate event after scoring 66.44% in the first session.

 

Invercargill Open B Pairs

There was a good turnout of 32 pairs at the end of August for the Invercargill Open B Pairs.

With not much bridge on at present, people travelled from Dunedin, Te Anau, Queenstown and places in between. Carol Scott directed the two session affair with little concern and with good humour too, literally! Geoff Eyles assisted with the movement to make an even contest. They ran a Mitchell followed by a double Howell which allowed the pairs the maximum number of opponents without striking any one twice. Well done.

Martin & Lobb Optometrists generously sponsored the tournament. There was a hearty lunch with all the trimmings. Prizes went to eight pairs from the different divisions. Lindsay Glover and Moss Wylie came home to win with a strong second session while Brad Johnston and Anne- Marie Russell combined well together and were rewarded for their long drive in finishing in second place. Margaret McDonald and Doug Harrington played well in being the top finishing Intermediate pair and were third overall.

 

The cards delivered opportunities to the bold bidders within the field.  A grand slam was on offer, missing two aces on this deal. However, only two pairs, Michael and Mary Perniskie and Sue Scott – Robyn Reidie made it to the 6 level with no-one going for gold.

 

 

Grand-slam is no better than a ruffing finesse of the A assuming that it is not led at trick one. 6, though, is an excellent spot.

With the National Congress just round the corner, many pairs will be off to Alexandra on 10^th/11^th September to work on their combinations. Both Teams and Pairs are on offer and hopefully we there will be some sun. Click here for further details.
