"The Union Jacks" from Cambridge...just there to have a good time.

 

It was all happening at the Don Rowlands Centre at Karapiro near Cambridge on Saturday 13^th August  where Cambridge  Bridge Club hosted the largest one day event in NZ. Aptly called the Cambridge Sixes, there were 252 players in 42 teams of  six bridge players, two from each grade - Junior, Intermediate and Open. The event is not only unique in that you have to be a team of six to enter, but it also involves more fun than usual encouraging each team to arrive dressed in a theme.

 

 Dress-up competition winners, "The Junior Bridge Kids" from Howick

 The Royle Card Crusaders from Auckland and the Junior Bridge Kids from Howick took out the dress up prizes. If the bridge wasn’t going too well, there was opportunity to make up for it in the trivia quiz that happened between the six rounds of bridge.  This was won by the Volcanoes from Taupo with the "Cats in Hats" from Tauranga being the runners-up.

The bridge did go well for Cambridge member, He Yuan, who was part of the winning Chiwi team and third in his section thereby winning two prizes.  The results in reverse order were:

Prizes were plentiful, thanks largely in part to our sponsor Lynda Lee from LJ Hooker, who sponsored all 12 of the section prizes. Paper Plus and the Cambridge Gallery also donated raffle prizes, which raised about $1200.

The Cambridge club spirit ran high all day with its members pitching in to help ferry boards of cards around, prepare and serve food and generally help. Lots also got to enjoy the event itself. Cambridge is lucky enough to have a thriving and growing club and the Cambridge Sixes depicts why. Bridge is fun!
