MacLeans College remains top Bridge School in Auckland

The last morning of July saw the annual Auckland-Northland Teams Bridge competition take place at the Howick Bridge Club. Four schools were represented by 11 teams in what was a four round Swiss competition.

After winning the trophy for the first time last year, Macleans College kept a firm grip on it with an outstanding performance from one of its teams, Macleans White, who won all four matches comfortably in scoring 75.45 out of a possible 80 victory points.

  1. Macleans White. Sheryl Luo, Tim Pan, Yiwei Qi, Hans Santoso                75.45
  2. Macleans Blue Brian Gue, Vincent He, Zachary Yan, Nicholas Yao          49.06
  3. Grammar D Bevan Xia, Alex Campbell, Jack Lobb, Max Gue                     43.54
  4. Grammar B Nick Schischka, Calvin Fraser, Aaron Dai, Ryan Lee              39.41

All four of the winning team are Year 11 students and as well as playing regularly in school breaks, are members of the Howick Bridge Club, along with several other Macleans students.

The other competing schools were Auckland Grammar School, Pakuranga College and in extending the southern boundary of the region just a little, Hillcrest High School from Hamilton.

An all Macleans match. Hey boys, where are the cards? Anyway, you seem to be enjoying the day even

without them!

Several of the students will be heading south in two weeks’ time to Christchurch for New Zealand Bridge’s annual Youth Bridge Weekend while we hope to have some school teams take part in the National Youth Teams, to be held in Hamilton on Friday September 23rd.

A word of thanks to those who not just made this day happen (to that list, thanks to Richard Andrew for dealing and scoring), but also who are encouraging the students at the schools: Peter Shore and Bob Grover at Auckland Grammar, Lance Bowden at Macleans College and Neil Beckett, Susan Rowe and Kaye Main at Pakuranga College and Bucklands Beach Intermediate School, a school not represented in this year’s competition but where a group of up to 40 students have been learning, enjoying and playing regularly.
