Paul Hobbs, a Life Member of New Zealand Bridge, passed away this week, aged 91. Paul was a founder member and first President of the Te Awamutu Bridge Club back in 1961. Both Paul and his wife Kathy played in the late 1950's at the newly formed Hamilton Bridge Club before deciding to form a club in their adopted home town. As well as being President, Paul has tutored new players and directed club sessions. In 1992, he was made a Life Member of the club.

He achieved the rank of grand master in 1995 and was a regular tournament player in the region for many years. He formed a very successful partnership with the late Diego Vettori and was part of a strong team including Bill Haughie and Ron Scott which had a lot of regional success.

A very tall man, he was very influential both at and far beyond his home club. In a past era, he was well known for the pipe he smoked. He loved his bridge and played at the Te Awamutu club each Friday until the Friday before he died. "He always came on Friday’s with a huge smile on his face for his weekly “fix” of bridge. He had also previously played at the Waikato Bridge Club.

The following tribute was paid to Paul by the late Allan Barclay  on his being made a life vmember of New Zealand Bridge:

"Once assistant principal of Te Awamutu College,  Paul is known for what you might term ramrod effectiveness.   He gets things done and everyone else gets the benefit.  Often such people receive no thanks, so it’s most appropriate Paul has been recognised by the game’s New Zealand practitioners in this way."

He is survived by his three children, their partners and grandsons.
