Double and Off

That’s Susan Humphries  who had a wonderful Easter Week-end at the Auckland Bridge Club with victory in both the Open Pairs (with Michael Whibley) and with Steph Jacob, Michael Whibley and Matthew Brown in the Open Teams. Then, later this week, she is off to Sydney to start a new life with Liam Milne, another Kiwi in residence in Sydney.

Steph and Susan

It’s been a great few weeks for Susan, recently selected to play in the New Zealand Women’s Team at this year’s Olympiad. Her success is hugely deserved, not just for her tremendous ability and potential in playing the game but for the never ending enthusiasm she shows at all times. She has a demanding full-time job but she is a great giver to bridge and her enthusiasm and willingness to help will be missed when she steps on the plane. She will be back from time to time and has a big NZ commitment with Steph Jacob in August. So many have already benefitted from her enthusiasm, her fund-raising, her serving on so many bridge committees. I am sure all NZ bridge players wish her well in Sydney.

That is the “off” part of the title. As you will have noticed, Michael Whibley also did the double. He is a Kiwi who has “done his time” across the Tasman and is playing superb bridge at present. He and Matthew are in our Open Team for Poland. He and Susan won the Pairs by 2.77% with a just over 60% average from Gary Foidl and Brett Glass. They showed great consistency with all three session scores being between 60 and 62%.

In the Teams, their team, called “The Young Ones” (maybe “Young Guns”?) started off with two small losses but then averaged a cool 18.61 vps over their last four matches to be leading qualifier. The final stage saw them suffer two small losses once again but when the music stopped, they were over 5 vps clear of “Song of Solomon” (Richard Solomon, Gary Chen, Pam Livingston, Kathrin Boardman) to complete their double. An excellent result yet again.

Winners Easter Teams 16

Auckland Easter Teams winners, Susan, Michael, Steph and Matthew.

When Michael is playing, rest assured his eyes are always more wide open!

What? No hands? There was plenty of excitement. Just move on to the next article…. and best wishes and good luck in Australia, Susan.
